I laud the efforts of the government for giving the accreditation to the Department of Education (DepED) as CPD Providers for renewing the teachers' Professional Identification Cards (PIC's) as mandated under Republic Act No. 10912, otherwise known as the Continuing Professional Development Act of 2016.

As it has been named, RA 10912 is a legislative measure for professionals all over the country to undergo for professional growth and development continuously to better serve their profession. Before they could renew their PIC, they need to go to these stuffs.

It has been noted that this law has been widely criticized by professionals as they see the CPD Law as a money making scheme by the PRC and CPD Providers to professionals. They are not against it, but they want to make the processing hassle-free in order to save more time and money to serve the country as to their profession.

One lapse of this law was not accrediting government-initiated seminars, trainings, workshops, and others similar as CPD Providers. So whether they are anchored with the mandate of the CPD Law and that it would develop their growth and development as professionals, they couldn't be used to renew their PIC's. Only trainings and seminars that are organized by CPD Providers shall be honored and weighed with a corresponding Credit Units (CU's).

As the prinicipal author of the law, Senator Antonio F. Trillanes, IV has directed to conduct a Senate hearing with the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) and some other government agencies concerned, including DepEd, to reduce the sufferings of the professionals in renewing their PIC and following the mandate of RA 10912. It has been agreed that DepEd may conduct trainings, workshops, etc. to be charged for free to teachers and they may be weighed with CU's.

And as announced today officially by DepEd, it revealed that they had been accredited by PRC as CPD Providers, which means that the seminars, trainings, and workshops that they will offer to professional teachers may be used to comply with CPD Law and will be given with an appropriate credit unit.

Truly, as a professional teacher by myself, I thank the Professional Regulation Commission, Department of Education, National Educators Academy of the Philippines (NEAP), and the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) for working as one to ensure that the process of acquiring CPD units in the department will be easy for us and it will not anymore affect our jobs and our profession in general.

I also hope that with this step, the legislators of this law have learned their lesson - that CPD is a need for professionals to innovate and step up to the rest of the world in delivering the services that we offer, but it must be without any cost to us so as not to affect our employment and the sacrifices that we have endured in order to secure to the PRC that we are worth it to be dubbed as "professionals".
