I express my dismay to ACTS-OFW Aniceto “John” Bertiz, III confronting a security officer in the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) last September 29 because he refuse to take off his shoes as a part of a security protocol implemented in the airport.

A CCTV footage showing the incident was uploaded on different Facebook pages and they went viral. It also showed that Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos subjected herself to the protocol of removing her shoes before Bertiz was flashed. The netizens were then enraged by his action even confiscating the security checker’s ID.

Bertiz then explained that there were several Chinese passengers who were not subjected to the NAIA protocol that’s why he reacted that way. But according to NAIA, they haven’t seen any Chinese passengers who passed before Representative Bertiz.

Based from my previous and first-time experience in undergoing security measures inside airports, removing shoes when passing through a metal detector is indeed done. It’s not just happening in NAIA. During my departure from Kansai International Airport to Clark International Airport, I was subjected by the airport officials to remove my shoes and they even confiscated a bottle of water which I carried on my small bag. Though sometimes, it doesn’t make sense, security measures like that are done in order to ensure the safety of each passengers.

That’s why for Representative Bertiz, I think he does know about security checks. It’s just that he thought that since he is a legislator and a high-ranking official, he cannot subject himself to protocols like this.
