As a Filipino citizen, I am proud to know that Senator Leila M. De Lima has been awarded with the prestigious "Prize for Freedom Award" from Liberal International last week.
Liberal International (LI) is a political international federation for liberal political parties. De Lima was conferred with the award during its 199th executive committee meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2017.
Senator De Lima will be the second Filipino parliamentarian to receive the human rights prize, after former president, Corazon C. Aquino, was recognised in 1987.
According to their website, LI’s Prize for Freedom is awarded to “a well-known personality of liberal conviction who has made outstanding efforts for the defence of freedom and human rights.”
During the awarding ceremony at Manila, some prominent personalities present were former President Benigno S. Aquino, III and incumbent Vice President Maria Leonor G. Robredo and members of the Liberal Party (LP). LP is one of the permanent members of the Liberal International.
I hereby congratulate our feisty senator for bagging the award for this year. This only shows that Senator de Lima is an icon of democracy - a person that despite pressures from the current administration, still shows her undying strength and compassion to serve the people even inside the prison cells.
Once again, I extend my warmest greetings and felicitations to our very own legislator, Senator Leila Norma Eulalia Josefa Magistrado de Lima for the Prize for Freedom Award of Year 2018. Another Filipina pride championed the hearts of the international community! The Philippines has been always proud of you.
Mabuhay ka, Senator De Lima!
